shauna-mcglameryShauna McGlamery “Queen Bee” (Director)

Shauna McGlamery is honored to be the “Queen Bee” of her Fenster Ranch Summer Camp hive. Shauna is a third generation native Tucsonan. Her fondest memories as a child were hiking up Sabino Canyon, playing in Sabino Creek, catching rainwater with her tongue, and of course soaking up the sun’s rays. Shauna continues to share these same activities with campers at Fenster Ranch Summer Camp. This is Shauna’s fourth summer expressing her visions, creative energy, passion for the environment, and enthusiasm in building a dynamic Fenster hive.

During the school year Shauna is the Art Teacher, Yearbook Advisor, Art Department Chair and National Junior Honors Society Sponsor at Flowing Wells Junior High. Shauna wakes up every morning eager to share her passion of creating art with students daily. Shauna is currently pursuing her Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University, with an emphasis in Administration and Principal K-12. Shauna’s dream is to create her own fine arts outdoor academy where students can excel in the great outdoors through experiential education, self exploration, and creative thought. With the support, love, and inspiration from Shauna’s family, friends, and community she knows that dreams do come true and looks forward to making her vision reality!

Shauna’s passions extend beyond the classroom environment and into nature and all aspects of her life. Shauna has worked in the camping and outdoor world for the past decade as a Camp Director, Camp Counselor, Art Director, CIT Director, Outdoor Educator, and Teacher in Arizona, Wisconsin, and Colorado.

Shauna creates a balance in her life by hiking, painting & drawing, attending farmer’s markets, supporting the arts, traveling, learning about cultures, celebrating diversity, creating a peaceful community, living environmentally conscious, and spending quality time with family and friends as well as making new ones!

Shauna uses her imagination and dreams to create a kind, loving, and unified summer camp hive inspired by these powerful words:

“You may say I’m a dreamer,

But I’m not the only one

I hope some day you will join us

And the world will live as one.”

- John Lennon

melissa-bonfigMelissa Bonfig (Art Queen)

“The call of “FIG” can be heard across camp. Hearing my name, I turn around and am greeted by a huge hug from a camper. This is one reason that FRSC has been my summer home for over 5 years. I am the art director at Fenster Ranch Summer Camp (I’m also known as the Art Queen.). I plan art activities to help the campers have fun, expand their creativity, and learn about themselves and others. We do a majority of “recycled arts projects” to encourage the campers to reuse materials in a creative way. It makes my day when a camper tells me about something they made at home from recycled objects or brings me “recyclables” from home and asks “Can we make something from this?”. The opportunity to be creative and have fun with kids all day attracted me to FRSC years ago, and the sense of community has kept me here. I thrive on the laughter of children, chatting with parents, hugs, and seeing that look of accomplishment on a child’s face after a difficult task. I love that moment in the “art hut” when I look up across the room and everyone is engrossed in a creative task and in their own world, with music in the background. During the rest of the year I am a teacher for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students. I spend my time hiking, enjoying the outdoors, cooking and enjoying Tucson festivities. I love to canoe, travel, and learn more about the world. I have a quote that expresses why I love being outdoors and why I love sharing the outdoors with others. The discoveries in nature are endless.

“In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” - John Muir

dana-mendozaDana Mendoza (Discovery and CIT Director)

Dana Mendoza is excited to be working as Discovery Director, CIT Director and Camp Juggernaut (helping on the ropes course and wherever else she’s needed). This is Dana’s eleventh year living in the beautiful Sonoran Desert, after growing up in Colorful Colorado. Dana has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Adventure Education from Prescott College, and will begin to pursue a Masters Degree in Wilderness Counseling and Psychology through Prescott College in the fall. During the last seven years she has worked for various school districts and youth organizations, taking youth K-12 on outdoor adventures, including backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing and canoeing. Dana also works for Epic Rides, a company that produces large-scale mountain bike events, and as a freelance Outdoor Adventure writer.

This is Dana’s third summer working at Fenster Ranch Summer Camp, which is a dream job for this adventurous soul! The wonderful community, beautiful campus and spectacular activities make working at Fenster an idyllic situation. In addition to being an outdoors woman, Dana enjoys drawing, spending time with family and friends, reading incessantly, traveling, and engaging with the artistic and musical community.

A quote to live by:
“Do not seek to follow the footsteps of the men of old; seek what they sought.”
- Matsuo Basho (1644-1694 Japanese Poet)

corrine-bancroftCorinne Bancroft (Hummingbird)

This is Corinne’s 5th summer at Fenster Ranch Summer Camp. She loves having fun in the sun with all the Fenster Ranch campers. Her favorite activities are playing in the creek or climbing on the Rocks and Ropes. Corinne will graduate from Hamilton College in May and plans to teach in Tucson for a year before going to grad school. The theme song for her last semester in upstate New York has been the Beatles “here comes the sun.”

And her power animal is a humming bird because she connects with their fast pace and love for sugar.

faith-hiseyFaith Hisey (Ropes Course Goddess)

Welcome to Summer Camp!

I am Faith, and I am the mother of two WONDERFUL daughters, Hope 9 and Grace 7. This is the second summer that I am lucky to be working the Ropes Course at Fenster Camp! My favorite things to do include spending time with my kids, adventuring, running, biking, and anything to do with WATER!
I have been in education for 20 years, and now have had the opportunity to work within the area of challenge course and experiential education everyday! It is so exciting; every experience is new and different!

My song to live by is by Kenny Chesney with Dave Matthews called I’m Alive ….
“….it’s good enough I know, because I’m alive, and well. Yes, alive, and WELL”
Here’s to a GREAT summer 2010!

heather-garrickHeather Garrick (Ropes Course Goddess)

Heather Garrick is an outdoor adventurist looking for any excuse to play outside! Her passions revolve around her love of nature, art, music, and traveling. She has traveled to and lived in many wondrous places. Some of the highlights are…backpacking and kayaking in Alaska (where she had a very close encounter with a Grizzly bear), hiking 300 miles of the Colorado Trail, exploring the rainforests of Costa Rica, living in Ocean Beach, Santa Fe, and Guanajuato, camping in La Barranca del Cobre, cross country skiing in the Pacific Northwest, Rock Climbing in Montana, and exploring the magical terrain of the Sonoran Desert. Heather is thrilled to be bringing her spirit of adventure and zest for life to the Fenster Ranch Summer Camp as she joins us for her first summer! Heather recently graduated from the University of Arizona with a Masters in Environmental Education. She has worked in the field of Education for the past decade as an Art teacher, Elementary Teacher, Middle School Science Teacher, Environmental Educator for the Tucson Audubon Society and Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, and has led outdoor adventure trips. She is also an experienced rock climber and professional backpacker. Heather looks forward to inspiring Fenster campers to reach new heights and believe in their own strengths as they experience the wonders of the ropes course and the amazing community at Fenster Ranch Summer Camp!
Quote to live by…
“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature — the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”
…because Rachel Carson had it all figured out.

kyle-dauriaKyle D’Auria (Bike Director)
I’ve always been into sports; anything from Baseball to Skateboarding. But my favorite, and what I’ve stuck to the longest is riding bikes. Besides riding, I enjoy making art and doing anything that requires creativity. I am a college student studying anthropology and art, and when I’m not working at Fenster Summer Camp, I’m a baker. Nature inspires me and is where I am most comfortable. I would choose a camping trip in the mountains over a trip to a big city any day of the week.
If I had to choose a quote that inspires me most it’d be from the movie Rocky:
“It’s not how hard you punch, it’s about how fast you get up again.”

justin-curranJustin Curran (Horse Wrangler)
This is my third summer involved with Fenster Ranch Summer Camp and it is because of the positive experiences and bonds that are realized with Campers, Staff Members and the Community that I keep coming back each summer. I am a Graduate Student studying School Counseling and working in Education that also coaches Basketball at Rincon High School. I enjoy bike rides, staying in shape, photography and bonfires and my passions include music, snowboarding, being near the ocean and playing basketball.

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right…
I love this lyric because it holds true to so many situations in life. When we are faced with a problem or an obstacle it is easy to point out and worry only about the negative but if we can look past and beyond, then we might be able to see the possibility of light.

HEAD COUNSELORS

bo-schwambacherBo Schwambacher (5-6 Head Counselor)

The freaky people make the beauty of the world resonates, moving through my eardrums and out through dancing fingertips. I am so excited to unite with the Fenster Camp tribe— the hive, the honey, and the waggle dance bees. My name is Bo, and I am someone who loves harmony, family, dancing, festivals, and of course, exploring with the beautiful people & campers of Fenster Ranch Summer Camp.

I love water. The Sabino Canyon monsoon rain streams sparkles in my memory as one of my favorite experiences as camp. It is amazing—there are tadpoles, slivers of mica, and exploration. I also cherish face painting—we all transform into jungle animals, faeries, and desert creatures. Camp is a celebration, dancing to drums and laughter.

The freaky people make the beauty of the world strikes me as true, authentic, and zany. I connect with poetry, education, and unity. I love the idea that we all embody uniqueness, and that is what connects us as a community. We can grow, learn, and share by expressing ourselves, cultivating the beauty of the world.

mike-pattonMike Patton (5-6 Head Counselor)

I’m Mike, this will be my second summer working at Fenster Ranch Summer Camp and needless to say, I couldn’t be more excited for an incredible summer back in the hive. Currently I’m sound engineering for a band on the road about to make our rounds through Canada and North America before returning home. When I’m not touring, I work with special needs children and adults through the JCC. Aside from the amazing people that surround me at Fenster my favorite part of summer camp would have to be art and seeing all the kids imaginations come to life. This is going to be an incredible summer and I’m looking forward to some serious fun in the sun with everyone!

melissa-daltonMelissa Dalton (7-8 Head Counselor)

My name is Melissa Dalton and I’m currently finishing up my sophomore year at the University of Arizona as an Accounting major. Outside of school I really enjoy the outdoors, listening to music, playing soccer, and attending all different types of sporting events. I have been involved with Fenster Ranch Summer Camp since I was 5 years old and was attending as a camper. Returning to the camp every summer is something I have always looked forward to and I thoroughly enjoy coming to work everyday and creating new fun experiences for the children. If I had to pick one song lyric to live by it would be “Just dance, gonna be ok,” by Lady GaGa. I really feel lyric is a reminder to not take life too seriously and to do your best to turn every negative moment into a positive moment.

dana-hillDana Hill (8-9 Head Counselor)

Hi my name is Dana Hill. I just finished my freshman year at the University of Arizona with a major in Physiology. I am really interested in the human body and am thinking about a career in physical therapy. I love sports. All throughout high school I was doing soccer and track, but currently I am just on a Co-Ed soccer team that plays on the weekends. I have been involved with Fenster since I was 12 years old. I’ve experienced being a camper, C.I.T., junior counselor for the 5-6 group and now a head counselor for the 8-9 group. I am very excited to be working with the 8 and 9 year olds and believe this summer will be the most fun yet. I look forward to camp all year long. At the end of each summer, I am really left with great memories that I’ll carry with me for a long time. The people at camp are so funny and nice which makes camp even that much more enjoyable. “Don’t worry. Be happy” is the song lyric that I live by because there are so many things that someone could worry about in life but sometimes you can find yourself worrying about unnecessary things which just weigh you down. If you just live each day as it is and not fret about small obstacles then I feel happiness is easier to come by.

eric-daltonEric Dalton (8-9 Head Counselor)

I am 19 years old and was born and raised in Tucson. I graduated from Sabino High School in 2009, and am currently attending the University of Arizona. I am majoring in business. In high school I played football and baseball, but I have also played soccer, basketball, track, and have recently been taking up golf. In my spare time, I enjoy watching movies with my friends. I also like to go hiking in the mountains surrounding Tucson. I attended Fenster Ranch Summer Camp from ages 4-12, and I also worked there from 13-16. This will be my first summer at Fenster in 3 years, and I can’t wait! I love spending my summers at Fenster Ranch Summer Camp because of the fun-loving atmosphere and the 9 weeks of adventures. One of my favorite movie quotes from Joe Dirt is “Life’s a garden, dig it”. I like this quote because it’s a great metaphor to life.

dominique-rueggDominique Ruegg (10-11 Head Counselor)

I am a soon to be graduate of college! Which makes me pretty happy! I really enjoy all outdoor activities such as hiking, running, biking, etc, and I prefer to do all those amongst nature. I’m a big fan of soccer even though I don’t play it as much as I used to. I love to read and I am a Sociology and Women’s Studies major so either of those topics can get me going on a roll! I have worked at Fenster for two summers and I just love being around high energy kids all day long because they remind me to appreciate the smaller things in life and don’t take things too seriously.
I know it’s cliché, but I try to live by ‘carpe diem: seize the day’ because you never know what each day can bring you and it’s important to take advantage of each one!

tyler-kuhnTyler Kuhn (10-11 Head Counselor)

Hi, my name is Tyler Kuhn, I have lived in Tucson for over 20 years. I am currently going to school at Northern Arizona University, located in the beautiful mountains of Flagstaff Arizona. I live for the outdoors; the trees and fresh air made the decision to move to Flagstaff very easy. My passions are for archery, camping, and rock climbing, or any other activity that keeps me outside. I always come home for the warm summer sun to visit my family and to join Fenster Ranch Summer Camp in all the fun! This will be my second summer as a camp counselor at Fenster. I love the atmosphere that Fenster Ranch gives off every single day. I cannot wait to see all of the faces from last year and all of the new faces this year!
“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.”

JUNIOR COUNSELORS

taya-lancasterTaya Lancaster (Junior Counselor)

I’m Taya! I’m a junior at Tucson High School. I have two sisters and they are a big influence in my life. I try to be a positive person and surround myself with amazing people! I love Tucson because the weather is always perfect for playing in. I love to laugh and share love with… everyone. I’ve been involved with Fenster for 8 years on and off, and have been working for 3. There is never a dull moment. I love sports, especially baseball. I like to dance, listen to music, be in the beautiful outdoors, and hang out with my family and friends.

My favorite quote is “You must be the change you want to see in the world” – Ghandi
I live by this because I feel like what you put into the universe is what you will get back, I also would like to believe that I created my own life and my own success, so I can create my own outcome of any situation I am put in. I look forward to another great year with awesome people, staff and campers and parents. Bring it on!

michael-raneriMichael Raneri (Junior Counselor)

I am Michael Raneri and I will be a Sophomore at Salpointe High School. This is my seventh year at Fenster Summer Ranch Camp. My first five years were a camper, the last two years I was a Counselor in Training. I am looking forward to being a Junior Counselor this year.

I like to work at Summer Camp because it is a lot of fun. I love to be outdoors and work with the kids and help them to have a great time. I think it is rewarding when you can help a camper have a great summer experience or learn to do something they have never done before.

I really enjoy weight lifting. I recently did boxing and MMA. I really like to challenge myself in physical activity and learning new things. I really like working out and listening to music.

My favorite quote is from Rocky, I like this quote because it doesn’t matter what gets thrown your way, you just have to do what is right and keep pushing through.
“You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward.”

michael-cornellMichael Cornell (Junior Counselor)

I’m just your typical soccer playing, fun-loving, gung ho counselor ready to have the best summer ever. This is my third year in the Fenster Community, and I’m sure that it will be the best one yet. When I’m not at Fenster, I go to St. Gregory, where I play hard on the school’s soccer and cross-country teams. I also play soccer for a small club team. I love to hike, bike, swim, rock-climb, and camp with my friends.

I have been inspired by a countless number of people but I suppose that my greatest inspiration comes from my brother, David, whose positive energy and steadfast encouragement have motivated me to always be active and to seek out fun wherever it may be. I’m excited to be here at Fenster because fun is always within arms reach.

stephen-lopezStephen Lopez (Junior Counselor)

Hi! My name is Stephen Lopez. I am 15 years old and I am a student at Salpointe Catholic Highschool. I love hanging out with friends, playing football, and making people laugh. I was a camper at Fenster for several summers and this is my third summer working at Fenster. I love working at Fenster and my favorite part about Fenster is seeing all the huge smiles on all the campers faces. One song that stands out to me is “Round Here” by Counting Crows and the lyric “…No one notices the contrast of white on white.” means a lot to me. To me it says that there is more than what is in front of us and you need to take the time to figure it out, which many people don’t. By doing this I have found you can find a lot out by just figuring things out more deeply.

jessie-haworthJessica Haworth (Junior Counselor)

Hi, I’m Jessica Haworth. I am 16 years old, this is my 4th summer at Fenster and I can’t wait to be back. I love working with kids and Fenster is the best way to spend the summer. It’s a great place to have fun, relax, and enjoy the best that Arizona summers have to offer. Next year I will be working on Sabino High School’s Student Council as well as their soccer team and the United Nations club. I love going to the beach, hiking, swimming, traveling and being with friends.

gabe-holdenGabe Holden (Junior Counselor)

Hi my name is Gabe Holden and am currently approaching my senior year at Catalina Foothills High School. Summer of 2010 will be my 9th returning summer as a Fenster Ranch Summer Camp leader. Favorite camp activities of mine include spontaneous hikes to the creek to cool down, and this summers’ diverse special activities. I look forward to meeting new campers and reuniting with the old making their summer and mine safe, fun, and outa’ the sun!
Song lyric I live by:
I have seen the others
and I have discovered
that this fight is not worth fighting
I have seen their mothers
and I will know another
to follow me where I’m going
- The General by Dispatch
(Highlighting the underlying themes of peace and compassion)

jasmine-benjaminJasmine Benjamin (Junior Counselor)

Hello all! My name is Jasmine and I’m a recent high school graduate heading to NAU to study psychology. When I’m not buried in my books, I’m out hiking and exploring, creating city adventures with friends, volunteering, or listening to Jimi Hendrix. I live by Ghandi’s idea that “In a gentle way, you can shake the world,” and am determined to leave the world a better place than I found it, to enjoy the beauty in all things, and to learn and experience all that I can fit into the years I am given. I’m absolutely thrilled to be a part of the Fenster community for the first time this year, and look forward to the next nine weeks of fun, learning, and creativity in the sun.

amanda-kuhnAmanda Kuhn (Junior Counselor)

Hey my name is Amanda Kuhn and this will be my third year working at Camp Fenster. Every year has always been more of an adventure than the previous so I can’t wait to see what this year has in store! I started working at Camp Fenster because I have always loved kids and envied their imagination and creativity; which we always encourage at camp. I just graduated from Catalina Foothills High School and will be attending the U of A in the fall and major in physiology as a Pre-Med. I love spending my time with friends, family, anything in the outdoors including hiking Sabino Canyon, traveling, and photography.

One of my favorite song lyric that I try to live everyday by is:

“If you and I made it this far, Well then hey, We can make it all the way, And they said no we can’t, And we said yes we can, Remember it’s you and me together, Hey it’s a new day.”

It explains how if we work together we can get through everything and every day is a new day!

julia-nestorJulia Nestor (Junior Counselor)

My name is Julia Nestor. I’m fifteen years old and I’ve been apart of Fenster Ranch Summer Camp for eight years – first as a camper and, for the past three years, as a counselor in training. I’ve learned so much from the directors and other counselors, and I really look forward to being a Junior Counselor this year.

My favorite thing about Fenster Camp is watching the campers develop friendships and interests that last long after camp is over. I love helping campers get the most out of activities like rocks and ropes, horseback riding, swimming, and art.

I’ve lived in three states and four cities. I’m originally from the east coast, but I love living here in Tucson. I attend Catalina Foothills High School and will be a sophomore in the fall. I love to ride horses, and have taken years of lessons. I love music, movies, book, and I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. My summer camp philosophy is making the most of each moment, and I hope impart that throughout the summer.

julia-barreroJulia Barrero (Junior Counselor)

Hi! My name is Julia and I’m 17 years old. I just graduated from La Salle High School in Pasadena, CA which is where I’m from originally. Before I moved back to Pasadena for high school, I attended elementary and middle school here in Tucson. In the fall, I will be studying at Stanford University. Now that I’m back in Arizona for the summer, I am very excited to be working at Fenster. I have three younger half-siblings that live here in Tucson and at Manzanita Elementary School, (who are also campers at Fenster) and a step-sister who lives with me in California who will be a senior at La Salle this year.

Some of my interests include spending time with my friends and family. In school, I have devoted my time to student government, sports, volunteering and community outreach, and theatre. While I have many interests I hope to pursue in college, I am planning to focus on International Relations and get involved in intramural sports and student groups.

My first summer at Fenster was two years ago when I volunteered in the Art Room with Fig as the “Art Princess.” I am so happy to be back, this time as Junior Counselor. Fenster fosters an encouraging, healthy, and just plain fun environment for the campers by each one of the counselors and Fenster team members. Not only is this camp a blast for the kids, but for all the staff here as well. Although I am somewhat new to the camp, I have had so much fun getting to interact with all the campers and I can’t wait for another memorable summer here.
I enjoy being outdoors hiking or going to the beach. Every summer I look forward to my family’s annual camping trip in California’s Sequoia National Forest. I also like to cook and bake with my family and friends. Some of my other hobbies include playing sports such as soccer and swimming, listening to music, and watching movies.

“And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.”
“The End,” - The Beatles

I like this lyric from the song, “In the End” by The Beatles because to me, it exemplifies the principle of balance, an idea by which I try to live. It highlights how interconnected we all are with each other and the world around us, and calls us to humbly trade in our selfish distractions so we can focus on a cause greater than ourselves, such as love.

matt-whitlachMatt Whitlatch (Junior Counselor)

My name is Matt Whitlatch and I am 18 years old. I am about 5 feet 8 inches tall, with long brown hair and blue eyes. My interests are things that I can do with my hands like working on cars, doing science or just simply building or fixing things. My favorite sports are basketball and football. My favorite activities are hanging out, going to football games, skateboarding and I really love biking. I have been involved with Fenster for about 5 or 6 years. I love working at Fenster because it gives me a chance to be outside all day but also it helps me work on my patience and communication skills. Also, I was a camper here at Fenster in the past and I wanna give the kids the same amazing experience I had. Fenster is just me, it’s what I love doing!
